King Frozenwind

Brief Lore

by the Teller of Tales
Mouvelian calender - 876 AE - 1076 AE

Year by year, Daniel succumbs further to the form of an Ice Elemental, slowly turning into a facet of ice, in doing so he preserves his immortal soul, such is the legacy of the crimes he committed from his allegiance with King Thorn the Cursed in ages past and Grenth’s blessings at the time of his fall in the caves below Drakkar lake. He is said to be among the Norn the precursor to the Nornbear.
It is rumoured he found solace in the lair of the snowmen, where he resigned himself to his icy corruption (fate) and prayed to the Gods one last time. In the faded Dwarven runes from the journal of King Hundar, it speaks that Grenth first visited this barely human man, and bid him welcome into the icy depths of the Underworld to be judged.

If not for the timely arrival of a well placed snowball, Daniel would be no more. Overcome with sheer dumbfounded amazement, he witnessed a certain feminine elf casually saying to the Lord of Death and Ice, "Why you’re Godship, it seems you have a snowball on your head!"

Grenth cursed him for his part in his allies’ crimes and for resisting death, thus making him an Envoy. It would seem that Grenth’s power over him did not fully manifest, due to the intervention of the mysterious elf. It is known that every Envoy bears the mark of that which killed them, the ice had put Daniel at the brink, but he had not perished. It was then that elf was revealed as Dwayna. Even as Grenth clasped his arms (of which King Frozenwind still bears those jagged icy scars) and began to draw his essence into the Underworld, the magic of the goddess’ blessings weaved with the magic of Grenth saturating his spirit with icy immortality. As fate conspired to bring these two gods to clash, the King of the Ice Wastes, the everlasting Snowman known as Frozenwind was created.

The title of Frozenwind was given, as the Lord of Death and Ice and the Goddess of Light and air had mingled there power into this soul, thus he became the paradox of both. Envoys are shepherds of the souls of the dead, but unlike them, Envoy Frozenwind is a shepherd of the holiday spirit. As an Envoy will appear to a newly departed soul, Envoy Frozenwind appears when festivities of his patron gods are on the wind.

The reaper of the Ice Wastes awaited his arrival, and would later give him the responsibility to atone for his crimes as a mortal King. Aware of the unique properties the spirit of King Frozenwind possessed, he placed the ornate Vapour Blade Aquila and Death’s Soul Reaper into the Kings hands with the orders to guard and protect the halls of Judgement from those wishing to disturb something worse than death itself…

Frozenwind has taken up this mantle since before the war between Kryta and Ascalon. Unknown to all but the Order of Whispers, there are records of his original name in an ancient Ascalon census dating back to the time of the founding of Nolani, suggesting that he was once under the guise of a Flaming Sceptre Mage. Order Scholars insist that if this mysterious spirit existed, he would rival the age of the many long dead legends.

Depending on which god the Envoy appears on behalf of, he has two appearances. The first is a warped death like apparition with a dreadful sneer for those who do not deserve to be among the living, these unfortunate souls feel the icy touch of death come to claim them before they are lost for eternity. The second however, is a glistening figure of purest white, with a mischievous wink and a merry manner this avatar goes about spreading good will and cheer, bringing hope to those that need it most. Many a lost traveller has had pause to think how, when they awoke, odd trinkets and supplies had appeared in their bags.
There is a third aspect however that is rare to be witnessed for this already elusive character. It appears at very sporadic times, the majority being when excessive violence is needed. Frozenwind appears to combust almost, ice and armour changing rapidly under a fog of shadow and flame, to reveal ornate jet black armour and charcoaled rocks where ice used to be, the head smothered in flames with an appearance shockingly familiar. The face of Thorn. It would appear that the bond King Thorn and King Frozenwind shared in life carried on past the grave. Thorn, it appears uses Frozenwind who can travel to the mortal realm freely as a vessel to accomplish certain tasks. The will power of both is immensely strong, so Thorn barley retains much of a hold for more than a minute or two at a time.

The legend of Frozenwind

In life, King Frozenwind loved his people, and had a great fondness for doting on them with lavish festivals of every sort and helping them live life to its fullest, it is with regret, that he was lead astray or perhaps tricked by King Thorn to perform those crimes of the past, for he would do anything at any cost to protect his kingdom from harm. It is understandable then, that he is compelled to attend festivals of life and death to teach his race the lessons of living and the folly of an inadequate death. His appearance while unnerving at the best of times as an ice elemental, is nothing to his odd chosen guise in the presence of intelligent races, it happens to be that of a snowman.

It is said that when he re emerged as Frozenwind from under the soul lakes it was deadly winter, with great longing he travelled back to his kingdom, but all who would see him coward in fear or fled, it was then, with a heavy heart as he departed the capital city of his people that he lay eyes on a small child on the outskirts of the city building a crude snowman. The child however was not alone, wolves had caught the little ones scent and had begun there attack. The little boy noticed too late, the wolves ambush, but still he stubbornly clutched an object to his self as if it would offer protection from there sharp fangs. Upon seeing the plight of the child, King Frozenwind came to his aid in all his elemental glory, and dispatched each wolf deep into the forest. When he returned to the clearing to see how the boy had fared he saw that the little one was terrified. At the thought of one so young growing up in fear much like the folk in the city he vowed he would not become an object of terror to the people he still held so dear.

Walking out of the clearing the boy witnessed a regal and magnificent snowman striding up to him. As the snowman bent down on one knee he spoke softly “Little man, you are the sort that makes men become Kings, I have witnessed no one braver then you, I am your snowman and you have rescued me in more ways then you know”. To this the little boy smiled a little and lifted up an ancient top hat, “This was my grandfathers, my snowman; I want you to have it as a present for scaring away the wolves”. Gently the snowman took the hat and placed it on his head, and stared down at the boy “Tell your kind what has happened here, and have this as a return for your gift and proof!” To which a brightly glowing orb appeared pulsing white. This was they say, the Frozen Kings heart. With that King Frozenwind let out a mighty laugh and vanished in a swirl of snow and wind. And so it was that the boy told the other children and as they grew up they told their offspring the tale, thus the legend of the Frozenwind was made.

Mad Queen Malafide

Allies of the elusive Envoy-King are few and far between. The “Mad” Queen Malafide is one such ally; this demented old crone is often seen at the envoys side on the chill autumn winds, aiding him in keeping the Monarch of Madness in check by whatever means necessary. Be it with a binding ritual or a broomstick to the head, Malafide is the master of Thorn’s Elite Guard (a parody of the Ice Elementals of King Frozenwind) and ensures he is kept in check. With the aid of her Frozenwind managed to breach the magical seals of the eye of the north and glean knowledge from the scrying pool at the battle of seasons end. At present Malafide is no longer in Tyria, after Frozenwind was successful in creating a portal for her to return to Ashynnt for an unknown purpose. He now has the dual responsibility of commanding Thorn’s elite guard and the Halls of Judgement.

Kazera Wolfsbane

The second identified companion is a ranger known as Kazera Wolfsbane. This ranger first met Daniel at the Eye of the North. With sharp eyes she spotted him wandering high above the ramparts at the great battle for Seasons End; in the space of a heart beat she launched a flurry of snowballs in quick succession at his head with her pie induced marksmanship skills. Needless to say the next day a small mountain of snow was piled up in her private halls and a Wintergreen Bow was to be found perched on a little hill near where she lived. Thus began the constant fight for who was going to get the last laugh. Needless to say, nobody won.
